When the Going Gets Worst….

John 11:1-44 (The Death of Lazarus; Jesus Comforts the Sisters; Jesus Raises Lazarus From the Dead)

Have you ever wondered why Lazarus had to be dead and in the grave for four days before his healing would bring God’s glory that Jesus promised (verse 4)? Why wouldn’t healing him on his deathbed be enough? I started wondering this as I read this passage again. I guess maybe it could be a foreshadowing to Jesus’ death and resurrection. He wanted to establish that He was stronger even than death. But I also think that sometimes He has to restore things from their absolute worst before we’ll believe. It has to be a circumstance where there is no other answer than that it was Jesus. We human beings are too smart for our own good sometimes. We don’t give Him the credit He deserves half the time. We reason and explain why something happened. But Jesus will absolutely get the glory when there is absolutely no explanation but Him. So when we are praying for something and it just seems to get worse, it doesn’t mean Jesus is done.  We need to keep trusting Him and believing His promises. He will come at just the right time. Even when the right time seems too late in our eyes.

“This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” John 11:4
