The Truth About Strongholds

Posted on February 1, 2012. Filed under: Uncategorized |

In my Wednesday night Bible study, we are reading Praying God’s Word: Breaking Free from Spiritual Strongholds by Beth Moore. It shows how the Word of God combined with prayer can help set us free from all kinds of things that get ahold of us and keep us in bondage. Things like addictions, unforgiveness, pride, guilt, deception, etc. So it was ironic that the day after we started this book, the verse on my Daily Bible app was Psalm 27:1, which says “The LORD is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid?” Wait, aren’t strongholds negative things?? That’s what we just talked about at Bible study. Why is God called our stronghold? Then I remembered something I’ve often heard Beth Moore say: Satan is a master of counterfeiting the things of God. So I guess this is what he does with strongholds. Strongholds are meant to be good. They are meant to be places of safety and protection. They are meant to be refuges. And we are meant to find this in God. But Satan tricks us into turning to other things for this protection and once we are in, we find out that we aren’t in a refuge, we are in a prison.

The LORD is my light and salvation. The LORD is the stronghold of my life. It should be HIM and HIM alone.
