Inside the Rock

I went to Sequoia National Park on Saturday and took a tour of Crystal Cave. At one point the tour guide said that no one in our group had asked the most common question yet: “If there is an earthquake right now, will we die?” At first he jokingly said, “Yes!” but then went on to explain that a cave, because it is below ground, was actually one of the safest places to be during an earthquake. He said it’s like if you’re in a pool and someone jumps in. If you are above the surface of the water, you are going to feel the impact of the splash strongly, but if you are under water, all you’ll feel is a little movement of the water. He had said earlier that we were basically inside a mountain. Or as I thought of it, inside a big rock. This made me think of how God is called our “Rock” time and time again in the Bible. And just as a cave can be protection from an earthquake, our Rock can protect us when life threatens to shake us up. 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 says:“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair;  persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” I think this describes the result of a life in Christ. We are going to go through the earthquakes of life, but we will be sheltered. We will be kept strong. We will not be destroyed.

Trina, you are an “old soul”, far wiser than your age would suggest. Well said.
