Living Backwards

“…the world was not worthy of them.” Hebrews 11:38

We tend to get things backwards. Just look at Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount in Matthew. He says time after time, “You have heard that it was said…but I tell you…”

I’ve read the “faith hall of fame” of Hebrews 11 many times before, but I’ve never really noticed the above verse before. This is what’s said of all those people who did incredible things and who underwent tremendous suffering for and through faith. “The world was not worthy of them.” We get this worth thing backwards too. We spend our whole lives trying to make ourselves worthy to the world. But the Word of God praises those who have so much worth that the world does not deserve them. That’s what we need to be focusing on. Not in an arrogant way that we try to become these great people better than everything and everyone, but that we give ourselves completely to God and let Him use us to do amazing things for others and for this world and for His kingdom. This ugly world doesn’t deserve the goodness of God, but He still gives it because of His grace. And He wants to make us part of this. So maybe we need to quit fighting so hard for approval. Because no matter how hard we work to get it, we will still fail. We can do everything right and we can still not be appreciated. People may still turn their backs on us. So we should forget about all of that and rise above it and put all that effort into serving our Father, in whom we have more worth than this world can possibly give.
