The Real Burden

“This is love for God: to obey His commands. And His commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.”   -1 John 5:3-5

This verse stuck out to me the other day when I was doing my devotions, especially the part about God’s commands not being burdensome. That line should make us hit the pause button. It’s very unnatrual. Commands are things we have to obey and they tend to be difficult or not fun. And sometimes it seems like God’s commands are the same way. Face it, it’s not always easy to live for God and obey Him. But look at the next part of the passage: “for everyone born of God overcomes the world.” There seems to be a connection become obeying God’s commands and having victory. This world is crazy. Life is tough. And I think the only way to get through it is to follow God. It may not be easy, especially at first. But it isn’t a burden, it is our lifeline, our salvation. The real burden is all the stuff that the world throws on us and the only way to get rid of that is to change things and start living God’s way. So I should challenge myself to start thinking about God’s commands this way. Whenever I find myself complaining or struggling to obey God, I need to try to see His wisdom in it and how it is setting me free from the burdens of the world.
